Biography of Alistair Blair

Alistair Blair is a British designer who spent a significant part of his career living and working in Paris, France. He was born on February 5, 1956, in Helensburgh, a small Scottish town situated on the northern shore of the Firth of Clyde bay. Blair studied at St. Martin's School of Art in London and graduated with distinction in 1978. He then went on to further refine his skills in France.

Early Career in Paris

In 1977, Blair secured a position as an assistant to designer Marc Bohan, who was working at Dior, in Paris. From 1978 to 1980, he worked as an assistant designer at Givenchy, and from 1980 to 1983, he worked under Karl Lagerfeld at Chloé. After his first stint in Paris, Blair moved to New York and worked as a designer in Karl Lagerfeld's branch there. During his time in New York, Blair began to contemplate creating his own brand that would allow him to release his own collections.

Establishing His Own Brand

Blair's six years in Paris had instilled in him a sense of continental culture, sophistication, and style that set the works of Parisian masters apart. However, when Blair showcased his first ready-to-wear collection in London in 1986, he received lukewarm reviews. The press and critics, however, acknowledged the youthfulness and eccentricity of the new British designer, who created playful and witty clothing that was sometimes deemed unwearable. It can be said that Blair's initial collections blended with the eccentric style of youth culture prevalent on London streets in the 80s.

Over time, Blair's style evolved significantly, introducing European glamour to London. His collections caught the attention of major department stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Henri Bendel in New York, Harrods in London, and Seibu in Tokyo. One of the defining moments in Blair's early career was when the Duchess of York commissioned him to design an outfit for her engagement.

From 1985 to 1989, Blair served as the head designer for his eponymous brand, 'Alistair Blair', while also working as a freelance design consultant for popular brands like Jaeger, Balmain, Complice, Turnbull, and Asser.

Later Career

Starting from 1988, Blair worked as a knitwear designer at McGeorge. In 1990, he returned to Paris to work on ready-to-wear collections for Balmain and Ballantine. In 1991, he became the creative director of Balmain. In the same year, he began working as a consultant for the French brand Cerruti. Two years later, he became a consultant for the fashion house Valentino in Rome.

In the late 90s, Blair served as a designer for Louis Féraud, a renowned French fashion house, where his elegant creations found great success among high society. He later worked for several years at the American brand Laura Ashley, but their collaboration ended in late 2004.

Blair typically incorporates luxurious fabrics such as cashmere, alpaca, duchess satin, gray flannel, fine soft leather, suede, and wool crepe, along with exquisite embroidery and lace, into his collections.
