John Varvatos: An American Fashion Designer
John Varvatos, an American designer of clothing, accessories, and fragrances, is known for his eponymous clothing line, which is as provocative as the people who promote it. Varvatos is friends with Iggy Pop, Chris Cornell, and Alice Cooper, who often appear in his advertising campaigns. While his exact age is unknown, it is certain that he was born in Detroit, Michigan, around 1955. He also revealed in an interview that his ancestors are from the Greek island of Cephalonia in the Aegean Sea. John Varvatos grew up in the less prosperous suburb of Detroit, Allen Park. From a young age, John loved to draw, and after graduating from Allen Park High School, he spent several years honing his artistic skills.

An Influential Mentor and Career Beginnings
In 1983, he had his first break when he landed a position at Ralph Lauren's studio, who was impressed by Varvatos's sketches. Since then, he has worked for the men's clothing line "Polo Ralph Lauren." "Ralph Lauren had a significant influence on my career," says John. "He taught me how to predict trends while maintaining my own individuality, as well as how to achieve my goals through any means. I will be forever grateful to him." In 1990, despite his gratitude towards Lauren, John Varvatos joined Ralph's competitor, Calvin Klein, to lead the men's clothing line "Calvin Klein." In 1995, John returned to "Polo," this time as the Vice President of the Men's Design Department. He earned much more money than before, which eventually allowed him to consider creating his own brand - "John Varvatos."

The Birth of a Successful Brand
In late 2000, John Varvatos unveiled his debut collection for his eponymous brand. The collection was well-received by many critics, and Varvatos began receiving lucrative offers from investors. Additionally, his accomplishments were recognized by the Council of Fashion Designers of America, who awarded him the "Perry Ellis Award for Menswear" for his highly successful debut. "At that time, I was only thinking about how to establish the company in the fashion industry," Varvatos said. "I wasn't thinking about any financial gain."
Growth and Expansion
In 2003, "Nautica Enterprises" acquired the "John Varvatos" fashion house, providing Varvatos with significant resources to expand the range of products under the "John Varvatos" brand. In 2005, with the support of "VF Corporation," who acquired "Nautica Enterprises" and the rights to the "John Varvatos" brand, Varvatos founded "John Varvatos Enterprises, Inc." and became the company's CEO and President. In the spring of 2006, John introduced his first collection of sunglasses, followed by his signature fragrance. In 2007, it was announced that the band "Velvet Revolver" would be the face of the advertising campaign for John Varvatos' new collection. Today, John Varvatos' clothing, eyewear, and fragrances are sold in major retailers such as "Saks Fifth Avenue," "Neiman Marcus," "Nordstrom," "Bloomingdales," "Barneys," and "Holt Renfrew."
Future Plans
In the near future, the designer plans to launch a line of women's fragrances and men's accessories.
