Biography of Allan Legere
Allan Legere, also known as the Monster of the Miramichi, was a notorious Canadian criminal, murderer, and arsonist. He worked as a car salesman in Winchester, south of Ottawa, and later lived on a farm near Inkerman in the late 1970s. Eventually, he returned to New Brunswick.
Escape and Additional Murders
In May 1989, Legere managed to escape from custody while serving a life sentence for the murder of a shopkeeper named John Glendenning in Black River Bridge, New Brunswick in 1987. His escape plan was relatively simple but effective. Legere fled from the Moncton hospital, where he had been taken for medical reasons, by convincing the guards to leave him alone in the bathroom. Using a piece of a car antenna, he was able to unlock his handcuffs and escape.
During the few months of his stolen freedom, Legere committed four more murders. His victims included 75-year-old Annie Flam, sisters Linda (45 years old) and Donna (41 years old) Daughney, and 69-year-old Catholic priest Father James Smith, whom Legere beat to death. His crimes instilled fear in the local community, causing people to be afraid to leave their homes after dark. Legere's name became synonymous with terror in New Brunswick.
Capture and DNA Testing
A reward of $50,000 was offered for information leading to Legere's capture, and he was eventually apprehended. Allan Legere became one of the first Canadian criminals to be subjected to DNA fingerprinting, a relatively new method that was used in forensic medicine to identify individuals based on the uniqueness of their DNA sequences.
Conviction
Legere was convicted again in 1991. Six female and five male jurors found him guilty on all four charges. It is worth noting that even the judge on the trial couldn't hide his interest in the jury's guilty verdict. As of 2008, Allan Legere was one of the 90 potentially dangerous escapees held under special supervision in the Special Handling Unit (The SHU) prison in Quebec. It is known that Legere is not popular among the prison population due to his crimes involving women and a priest, which is not well-received by fellow inmates.
