Allenby Chilton's footballing journey commenced at Seaham Colliery. In 1938, he joined Liverpool as an amateur, before securing a move to Manchester United in November of the same year. Despite not making his first-team debut until September 1939, Chilton's early career was disrupted by the outbreak of World War II.

After the war, Chilton became a mainstay in Matt Busby's first-ever team at Manchester United. He played a pivotal role in the 1948 FA Cup triumph and was instrumental in the club's First Division victory in the 1951/52 season. During the 1953/54 campaign, Chilton captained the United side.
