Biography of Enzo Bearzot
Enzo Bearzot was an Italian footballer, coach, and manager. He is best known for leading the Italian national football team to a triumphant victory in the 1982 FIFA World Cup. He was awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic for his contributions to the country.
Early Life and Playing Career
Vincenzo Bearzot was born on September 26, 1927, in the small town of Aiello del Friuli in the province of Udine, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy. As a player, Bearzot had a modest career as a central defender. He made his professional debut at the age of 19 for the club "Pro Gorizia" in 1946 but left after two years to join the famous "Internazionale Milano" in the Serie A. After three seasons with "Inter Milan," Bearzot moved to Sicily and played for the local club "Catania" for the next three years. He then spent a long period playing for "Torino" from 1954 to 1964, with a short stint back at "Inter Milan" in 1956-1957. During his career, he appeared in 251 matches in the Italian Serie A and represented the national team once in 1955.
Coaching Career
After retiring, Bearzot became an assistant coach for "Torino," working alongside renowned coaches such as Nereo Rocco and Giovan Battista Fabbri. He then moved to Tuscany, where he took his first appointment as the head coach of the Serie C club "Prato." However, instead of pursuing a club career, Bearzot chose to work for the Italian Football Federation.
In 1974, he served as an assistant coach to Ferruccio Valcareggi for the Italian national team in the FIFA World Cup. In 1975, after the World Cup in West Germany, Bearzot became an assistant coach to Fulvio Bernardini, eventually being promoted to the head coach of the Italian national team in 1977. Under his guidance, Italy reached the fourth place in the 1978 FIFA World Cup, showcasing an exciting style of play. The situation repeated itself in 1980 during the European Championship held in Italy.
1982 FIFA World Cup Victory
The most notable moment of Bearzot's coaching career came in 1982 during the FIFA World Cup. The Italian national team faced criticism in the media for their poor performance in the first three matches. In response, Bearzot banned the team from interacting with journalists. Following this decision, Italy displayed excellent football, defeating Argentina and Brazil in the second round, Poland in the semifinals, and Germany in the final. This victory marked Italy's first World Cup win since 1938. Despite initial skepticism, Bearzot became idolized by passionate Italian fans.
Later Career and Legacy
Italy failed to qualify for the 1984 European Championship, and Bearzot faced criticism for relying on aging players who had lost their form. After Italy's defeat by France in the 16th round of the 1986 World Cup, Bearzot resigned as head coach.
After a long period of rest, Bearzot was appointed as the president of the Technical Sector of the Italian Football Federation in 2002, the country's main coaching organization. He held this position for three years before retiring in 2005. Bearzot passed away on December 21, 2010, in Milan at the age of 83. His contribution to Italian football and the triumph in the 1982 World Cup cemented his legacy as one of Italy's greatest football figures.
