Biography of Ally Sheedy

Ally Sheedy is an American stage and film actress, as well as an author. She gained fame for her roles in the films "The Breakfast Club" (1985) and "St. Elmo's Fire" (1985). She was born on June 13, 1962, in New York City, with the full name Alexandra Elizabeth Sheedy. She has a brother and a sister, Patrick and Megan. Her mother, Charlotte (maiden name Baum), is a writer and public relations agent. Charlotte was involved in movements fighting for civil rights and women's rights. Ally's father, John J. Sheedy Jr., is an advertising specialist. The parents divorced in 1971. In 1980, Ally graduated from Columbia Grammar & Preparatory School in New York.

Early Years and Career Beginnings

At the age of six, Ally started attending the American Ballet Theatre studio and planned to dedicate her life to dancing. However, her struggles with anorexia nervosa led her to change her plans, and she turned to acting. At the age of thirteen, Sheedy wrote a children's book called "She Was Nice to Mice" about mice at the English queen's court. During her teenage years, Ally began performing in various local theater productions. Her debut in film came with the movie "Bad Boys" starring Sean Penn. This was followed by several roles in successful films such as "WarGames," "The Breakfast Club," and "St. Elmo's Fire." Sheedy was hailed as part of the new generation of stars alongside Demi Moore. However, after an initial surge in popularity, she appeared in several unsuccessful films like "Heart of Dixie" and "Maid to Order," which failed at the box office. Consequently, she stopped receiving offers for film roles. According to Sheedy herself in an interview with Salon entertainment magazine, she was seen as "cold as ice, unfit for film roles, unfit for work, unfit for sex." Managers and agents advised her to "get a boob job," wear more makeup and less clothing, and socialize with more successful movie stars. They told her, "The problem with you is that no one wants to fuck you," which led her to believe that "my career went straight to the trash." In the late 1980s, Sheedy went through a difficult period in her life, seeking treatment for her addiction to sleeping pills and battling bulimia. During this period, her film career was considered over. In 1989, after completing treatment, Ally moved to New York City and gradually began performing in television movies and direct-to-video films.

In 1998, she portrayed photographer Lucy Berliner in the film "High Art," a role that earned her critical acclaim. Sheedy won the Independent Spirit Awards and the National Society of Film Critics' prize for this performance.
