The Eclectic Artistry of Alva Noto
Carsten Nicolai, known by his stage moniker Alva Noto, is a German artist, musician, and record label owner who seamlessly blends art and music as exploratory tools.
Musical Mastermind
Under the alias Alva Noto, Nicolai stands as an eminent figure in contemporary electronic music. His 20+ solo albums, collaborations with Scanner, Ryoji Ikeda, and Yoko Towada, have catapulted him to prominence. Notably, he has produced four albums with Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto.
Experiments in Sound
Nicolai's sonic experiments stem from a childhood fascination with bats. Driven by a belief that he could communicate with them, he pursued studies in architecture and landscape design while exploring the theoretical properties of sound and space.
Founder of Raster-Noton
In the early '90s, Nicolai established the experimental record label 'Noton' to showcase his conceptual and experimental musical endeavors. It later evolved into 'Raster-Noton,' releasing most of his and collaborator's recordings.
Sonic Architect
Nicolai manipulates sound using oscillators and sound generators, without relying on sequencers. He utilizes the sounds of electronic devices like fax machines and modems to create rhythmic structures.
Beyond Music: Visual Interpretations
As an artist, Nicolai visualizes sound through kinesthetics. His installations and sculptures combine sound, painting, and sculpture, with his own music often taking center stage.
Global Recognition
Nicolai's artwork has graced the hallowed halls of renowned museums worldwide, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Tate Modern. He has participated in the prestigious Venice Biennale.
Label Owner and Award Winner
As owner of Raster-Noton, Nicolai oversaw the '20 to 2000' CD series, which garnered the Golden Nica prize at the Prix Ars Electronica in 2000.
