Biography of Alvaro Parente

Early Career and Success in GP2

Portuguese racing driver Alvaro Parente made a stunning debut in GP2, achieving his first victory in the first race at the Circuit de Catalunya. This win made him the first Portuguese driver to win in the GP2 series. Parente led from start to finish, crossing the line ahead of seasoned drivers Bruno Senna and Andreas Zuber. He finished the season in eighth place overall.

Debut and International Career

After winning the European Junior Karting Championship in 1998, Parente made his racing debut in 2001 at the age of 16 in the Spanish Formula 3. The following year, he joined Team Portugal and secured one victory before finishing fourth in the series. Parente then began his international career in 2003, moving to the Formula 3 Euroseries with Team Ghinzani. However, the Mugen-Honda engine proved to be much slower than the Mercedes, and Parente could only earn a single point. He also made appearances in the Italian Formula 3 and British Formula 3, partnering with Carlin Motorsport for the first time at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit. This brief contact paved the way for a contract with Carlin for the 2004 season, where he competed in the British series, earning one victory and finishing seventh in the championship. Parente also participated in the Formula 3 Masters and the Macau Grand Prix, but the outdated Mugen-Honda engine could not compete with those using Mercedes, resulting in an early exit.

Success in British Formula 3 and A1 Grand Prix

Parente stayed for another season in the British Formula 3, and his experience allowed him to clinch the championship with four races remaining, earning a total of 11 victories. This result enabled him to represent Portugal in the new A1 Grand Prix series. In 2006, Parente joined the World Series by Renault with Victory Engineering, securing his first win in Istanbul in only the fifth race of the season. He went on to earn two more victories at the Nurburgring and Circuit de Catalunya, finishing fifth overall. He hoped to enter the GP2 series in 2007 but lacked the necessary funding. Consequently, he remained in the World Series with French team Tech 1 Racing, signing a contract after pre-season testing. During the 2007 season, Parente achieved five podium finishes, including wins in Monaco and Spa, ultimately becoming the champion at the final round in Barcelona on October 27. As a reward for his World Series victory, Parente tested with the Renault team on January 17, 2008, at the Jerez circuit.

Move to GP2 and Continued Success

In 2008, Parente achieved his goal and moved to the GP2 series with Super Nova Racing, the main support series for Formula 1. He had an impressive start to his GP2 career, winning the first race at the Circuit de Catalunya, making him the first Portuguese driver to win in the GP2 series. Parente led from start to finish, crossing the line ahead of more experienced drivers Bruno Senna and Andreas Zuber. He finished the season in eighth place overall. The Super Nova team gave Parente the nickname "Chachi" because of his resemblance to a character from the American sitcom "Happy Days."

Continued Career

In 2009, Parente competed in the GP2 Asia series with the Qi.Meritus team and continued to race in GP2 with the Ocean Racing Technology team.
