Biography of Alvin Lee

Early Life and Musical Influence

Alvin Lee, an English vocalist, composer, and guitarist, was born on December 19, 1944, in Nottingham, England. Growing up, Lee was exposed to a wide range of music, thanks to his parents' collection of country, blues, and jazz records. He developed a love for music at an early age, immersing himself in the sounds of blues, jazz, and rock 'n' roll.

Early Musical Journey

At the age of 12, Lee's father asked him to choose a musical instrument to learn. Initially, Lee chose the clarinet but soon switched to an acoustic jazz guitar with an "f" shaped soundhole after being inspired by a meeting with the renowned musician Big Bill Broonzy. He took lessons and discovered the recordings of American bluesmen like John Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters. Lee went on to experiment with various guitars, including the iconic Gibson ES335, which became his favorite and shaped his signature sound.

Formation of Ten Years After

Lee's musical talent did not go unnoticed, and he was invited to join the local band "Atomites," where he met bassist Leo Lyons, who would later become his colleague in the legendary band "Ten Years After." The band went through several name changes, eventually settling on "Ten Years After." They gained recognition through their electrifying performances at clubs and festivals, including a memorable appearance at the Woodstock Festival.

Success and Solo Career

During their existence from 1966 to 1974, Ten Years After released 12 full-length albums and became one of the iconic rock bands of the 1960s. They were the first rock band to be invited to perform at the Newport Jazz Festival and also played at the legendary Woodstock Festival.

After the breakup of Ten Years After, Alvin Lee embarked on a solo career, forming bands such as "Alvin Lee & Co.," "The Alvin Lee Band," and "Ten Years Later." He also reunited with the original members of Ten Years After on several occasions. In the present day, another reunion of the band is anticipated.

Overall, Alvin Lee's unique blend of blues, jazz, and rock 'n' roll, showcased in his explosive performances, has made him a legendary musician who continues to captivate audiences with the depth of his talent.
