Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Herbert B. Khaury, known as Tiny Tim, was born on April 12, 1932, in New York City. Of Lebanese and Polish Jewish descent, he developed a love for music at a young age when his father introduced him to a phonograph playing Henry Burr's "Beautiful Ohio."
Growing up in Manhattan, Tiny Tim became enamored with musicians such as Rudy Vallee, Al Jolson, and Bing Crosby. He experimented with various stage names before settling on "Tiny Tim."
Breakthrough Success
In the early 1960s, Tiny Tim emerged from obscurity with his unique falsetto voice and ukulele playing. Performing at clubs and universities, he gained a cult following.
In 1968, he released his debut album, "God Bless Tiny Tim." The album featured the hit single "Tip-Toe Through the Tulips," which sold over 200,000 copies.
Career Peak and the 1970s
Tiny Tim's career reached its height in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He released several more albums, including "For All My Little Friends" (1969). He also appeared on popular television shows such as "The Ed Sullivan Show" and "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson."
However, public interest waned in the early 1970s, and Tiny Tim's career took a downturn.
Personal Life and Struggles
Tiny Tim married Victoria Budinger, known as Miss Vicki, in 1969. They had a daughter, Tulip, but the marriage ended in divorce eight years later.
He remarried twice more: to Miss Jan in 1984 and Miss Sue in 1995. Both these marriages also ended in separation and divorce.
Later Career and Legacy
Tiny Tim's career experienced a resurgence of interest in the 1990s. He appeared on television shows, played in films, and toured regularly.
On November 30, 1996, while performing at a festival in Massachusetts, Tiny Tim suffered a fatal heart attack. He is buried in Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Despite the ups and downs he faced throughout his life, Tiny Tim left an indelible mark on American music and popular culture. His unique musical style and eccentric personality continue to be celebrated and admired to this day.
