Early Life and InfluencesBartolommeo Vivarini was a Venetian painter and a possible nephew or student of Bartolomeo Vivarini. He emerged as a prominent figure in the Venetian school and developed his style under the influence of Giovanni Bellini. Influenced by Bellini's vibrant colors, he incorporated their brilliance in his own works.
Career in Venice
Vivarini's career was centered in Venice, beginning in 1464. He painted until after 1507, leaving behind a significant body of work. However, his stature in art history was initially inflated by Bernard Berenson's early claims. Subsequent research later reassessed his contributions, placing him within a more modest yet significant role in late Quattrocento Venetian painting.
Artistic Style and Legacy
Vivarini's art served as a bridge between the Murano school of the Vivarini family (including his father Antonio and uncle Bartolomeo) and the early works of his pupil, Lorenzo Lotto. While experiencing the influence of Giovanni Bellini, Vivarini remained a dedicated follower of Antonello da Messina. His London portrait exemplifies Vivarini's approach, featuring a traditional composition and dark background but introducing an innovative hand resting on a parapet. The subject's face is shown nearly full-frontal, reflecting the influx of new ideas in Venetian art.
