Amadou Toumani Touré
Childhood and EducationAmadou Toumani Touré, often known as ATT, was born on November 4, 1948, in Mopti, Mali. He received his secondary education in Bamako. In 1969, he enlisted in the army and began his military career.
Military Career
From 1972 to 1978, Touré trained at the Malian military academy in Kati and the Airborne Forces academy in Ryazan, USSR. He subsequently pursued additional military education in Russia (at the "Vystrel" courses) and France.
In 1978, he became the commander of the presidential guard. He rose through the ranks, serving as:
Major: 1984, appointed commander of the paratrooper-commando battalion
Captain: 1990, returned to Mali and resumed command of the paratrooper-commando battalion
1991 Coup and Transition
In 1991, during a period of political instability, Touré led a group of young officers who staged a military coup that overthrew President Moussa Traoré, who had ruled Mali for 19 years. Touré served as interim head of state from March 1991 to June 1992, when he handed over power to democratically elected President Alpha Oumar Konaré.
Foundation for Children
After retiring from military service, Touré founded the "Foundation for Children" with the support of former US President Jimmy Carter and several philanthropists. The foundation aimed to:

In 2002, Touré entered the presidential race, supported by a coalition of 27 political parties. He won the election in a landslide victory, becoming the fifth president of Mali.
