Early Life and Education

Amanda Marie Knox was born in 1987 in Seattle, Washington. She grew up in a family with her mother, Edda Mellas, who was a mathematics teacher, and her father, Kurt Knox, who worked as a vice president of finance at Macy's. Her parents divorced when she was young. Amanda attended Seattle Preparatory School before enrolling at the University of Washington in 2005.

Studying Abroad in Perugia

In 2007, Amanda, known for her excellent academic performance, participated in a year-long student exchange program at the University for Foreigners in Perugia, Italy. She studied Italian, German, and literature during her time there. Amanda shared an apartment with English student Meredith Kercher and two Italian students. It was during this period that she began a romantic relationship with Raffaele Sollecito, a fellow student and aspiring engineer.

The Murder of Meredith Kercher

On the night of November 1, 2007, Amanda's neighbor, Meredith Kercher, was brutally murdered. Her body was discovered the next day, showing signs of strangulation, multiple stab wounds, and sexual assault. The crime scene revealed bloodstains on the walls, bed, and floor, and Meredith's partially dressed body was found on the floor, partially covered by a blanket. It was later determined that cash, 300 euros, two credit cards, and two mobile phones belonging to Kercher were missing. The phones were later found in a park, about a kilometer away from the crime scene.

Accusations and Trials

Shortly after the murder, Amanda Knox, Raffaele Sollecito, and Rudy Hermann Guede, a 20-year-old from Ivory Coast, were identified as suspects. Amanda was the one who first noticed something was amiss after repeatedly failing to reach Meredith. She and Sollecito alerted the police. During police interrogations, Sollecito expressed uncertainty about whether Knox was with him at the time of the murder, which later influenced the harsh sentence she received. Amanda herself accused Patrick Lumumba, the owner of a bar where she occasionally worked, of potential involvement in the crime. However, her false accusation led to a counter-charge of defamation against Lumumba, resulting in a fine of 40,000 euros.

Legal Proceedings and Acquittal

The investigation into Meredith Kercher's murder was complex and convoluted. However, in 2011, a new trial concluded that Amanda Knox was innocent. The previous charges against her were deemed baseless, and the guilty verdict was overturned. Amanda was released from prison immediately following the court's decision. Throughout the proceedings, numerous theories and interpretations of Amanda's role in the crime were presented. One of the prosecutors referred to her as a "witch," while one of her lawyers even suggested she had a dissociative identity disorder. Life After Incarceration

She also faced the erroneous diagnosis of HIV during a medical examination, leading to intrusive requests for a list of all her past lovers, which later became public.
