Early Life and Career Beginnings

Amanda Peterson, born Phyllis Amanda Peterson, was the youngest of three children in her family. She was born on July 8, 1971, in Greeley, Colorado. Her father, James Peterson, was an otolaryngologist, and her mother's name was Sylvia. Amanda started her acting training at a young age. In the early years of her career, she went by the name Mandy, a nickname given to her by friends and family.

Amanda made her stage debut at the age of seven, playing Gretl in the musical "The Sound of Music." A year later, she had a small role in the musical film "Annie." Her early television appearances included roles in the series "Father Murphy" and "Silver Spoons." In the 1983-1984 TV season, she portrayed Squirt Sawyer in the drama series "Boone," which unfortunately was canceled after one season.

In 1986, Amanda starred in the comedy film "Can't Buy Me Love" alongside Patrick Dempsey. The film's title was changed from "Boy Rents Girl" after the producers acquired the rights to use the song "Can't Buy Me Love" by The Beatles. The movie received mixed reviews but became a hit, making Amanda and Dempsey instant teen idols.

After her success in "Can't Buy Me Love," Amanda appeared in several films, including the post-apocalyptic movie "The Lawless Land," the teen drama "Listen to Me," and the TV thriller "Fatal Charm." From October 2000 to May 2012, she faced multiple arrests for various offenses, including assault, stalking, and driving under the influence. She was also involved with drugs and was suspected of drug distribution.

Death and Legacy

Amanda Peterson passed away at her apartment in Greeley on July 3, 2015, at the age of 44. Her family became concerned when she missed a scheduled family dinner and called the police, who found her body. While her apartment door was open, there were no signs of foul play according to the Greeley Police.

In an interview shortly after her daughter's death, Sylvia mentioned that Amanda had struggled with drugs in the past but was clean at the time of her death. Sylvia added that Amanda's death was not related to drugs. The autopsy, scheduled for July 6, 2015, revealed that Amanda died from an accidental overdose of medications.

The coroner's report indicated that Amanda had recently undergone a hysterectomy and was prescribed gabapentin for postoperative pain. She had also been taking morphine, which was provided by one of her friends. The autopsy revealed traces of respiratory and sedative medications, antipsychotics, opioids, and marijuana. The combination of medications and drugs resulted in respiratory failure and ultimately led to her death.

In September 2015, Amanda's family revealed in an interview on "The Doctors" that she had been sexually assaulted at the age of 15 and had kept it a secret throughout her life.

Amanda Peterson's life and career were filled with both success and struggles. Despite her talent as an actress, she faced personal challenges that ultimately led to her tragic demise. She will be remembered for her role as Cindy Mancini and her contributions to the entertainment industry.
