Amanda Ripley: A Journey Through the Alien Universe
A Controversial CreationAmanda Ripley, initially conceived as a minor character in the "Alien" franchise, has evolved into a significant figure in her own right. Unlike her mother, Ellen Ripley, Amanda's screen time was limited, yet she emerged as the protagonist of her own video game.
Birth and Early Life
Amanda "Amy" Ripley, daughter of Ellen Ripley, made her first appearance in a deleted scene from the film "Aliens." According to this scene, Ellen had a 10-year-old daughter named Amanda. During the 57-year gap between the first and second Alien films, Amanda led a normal life, marrying and taking the surname "MacLaren" before passing away. Ellen only caught a glimpse of her grown daughter in a photograph, which coincidentally featured Elizabeth Inglis, the mother of Sigourney Weaver, who portrayed Ellen.
Deleted Scene and Weaver's Fury
The deleted scene was cut from the film due to time constraints, much to the dismay of Weaver. She believed the episode was crucial for her character's development. In the project known as "Alien II," which was later reworked into "Aliens," Ripley's daughter (unnamed in this version) was supposed to survive the gap between films, but by the start of the sequel, she was an elderly invalid. In this iteration, Ellen confronted her daughter, who reproached her for her prolonged absence.
The Mysterious Conception
Amanda Ripley was conceived during a layover between towing missions, violating the Weyland-Yutani Corporation's policy. Despite this, Ellen Ripley faced no consequences for her actions, and her pregnancy proceeded without complications, although she gave birth to Amanda at home.
A Daughter's Journey
Fifteen years after the incident on the "Nostromo," Amanda became an engineer for Weyland-Yutani. She was contacted by the company's synthetic, Christopher Samuels, who informed her that the "Anesidora" had discovered a flight recorder from the "Nostromo." The device had been brought to Sevastopol Station, a warehouse base orbiting the gas giant KG348.
Arrival at Sevastopol
Upon arriving at Sevastopol, Amanda discovers it nearly empty. One of the few survivors, Axel, warns her of a mysterious killer. Moments later, he is killed by a terrifying and unidentified monster. Ripley soon encounters Samuels, corporate employee Nina Taylor, and Marshal Waits with his deputy, Ricardo.
The Tragic Sacrifice
In a safe haven, they delve into the situation, learning that the monster was brought aboard by the "Anesidora's" captain, Henry Marlow. Waits helps Ripley lure the Alien into a separate compartment, then catapults it into space without allowing Amanda to follow. She escapes by donning a spacesuit and leaping back to the station. The Alien perishes in the gas giant's gravitational pull.
The Android Massacre and the AI Revelation
Ripley's victory is short-lived as the station's androids initiate a massacre. With Samuels' help, Ripley contacts the station's artificial intelligence, "APOLLO." The synthetic sacrifices itself to grant Ripley access to the system's core. There, Amanda learns that the station was secretly purchased by Weyland-Yutani and that the AI was ordered to protect the Alien at all costs, regardless of human casualties.
The Alien Nest and Escape
When Ripley reports the Alien's death, the AI reveals the presence of an alien nest in the station's maintenance area. Amanda escapes the nest and triggers a reactor purge to destroy the creatures, but some escape. With Taylor and Marlow, Ripley seeks a way off the station, heading for the "Anesidora."
A Heartbreaking Discovery and a Deadly Chase
During her escape, Ripley finds a message from her mother, shedding light on her past. Marlow tries to destroy the ship and the station, but Ripley and Taylor incapacitate him, sacrificing Taylor in the process. The "Anesidora" explodes, severely damaging the station, which begins to plummet towards KG348.
The Cosmic Rescue
Amidst the chaos, Ripley establishes contact with the "Torrens," the ship that brought her to the station. She first docks it with the infected station, then attempts to board. With conventional methods unavailable, she employs her old strategy of space jumping. Her attempt is thwarted by the Alien.
Defeating the Alien and a Tragic End
Breaking free, Amanda leaves the doomed station, sacrificing herself to separate it from the "Torrens." Aboard the rescue ship, she faces the horrors of a new Alien. The creature corners her in an airlock, which she valiantly opens, ejecting herself and the monster into space.
Survival and Legacy
Fortuitously, Ripley is still wearing her spacesuit when she opens the airlock, giving her a slim chance of survival. The game's final moments show her adrift in space, suddenly awakening to a flash of light. The circumstances of her rescue remain uncertain, but the events in the second "Alien" film confirm that she did survive Sevastopol Station.
Personal Life and Death
Amanda Ripley later married and adopted the surname of her spouse. She had no children. On December 23, 2177, Amanda Ripley passed away from cancer. Her body was cremated, and her ashes were interred in a Wisconsin cemetery.
