Bergognone: A Renowned Lombard Painter
Early Life and InfluencesBergognone was an Italian artist born in the Lombard region. His nickname hints at his affinity for the Burgundian school, and his style bears similarities to that of Vincenzo Foppa. Notably, he was influenced by the renowned artist Leonardo da Vinci.
Major Works in Certosa di Pavia
Bergognone's most acclaimed works are found in the Certosa di Pavia, a Carthusian monastery, where he painted from 1486 to 1494. These paintings showcase his mastery of perspective and meticulous attention to detail.
Career in Milan and Beyond
Later in his career, Bergognone worked in various churches and basilicas in Milan, including the Sant'Eustorgio and San Satiro. After 1497, he relocated to Lodi and later to Bergamo in 1512. Shortly before his death, he returned to Milan and worked in the San Simpliciano basilica.
Legacy and Impact
Bergognone's legacy lives on through his many works, which are displayed in museums around the world, including the Pinacoteca Brera and Museo Poldi Pezzoli in Milan, the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, and the Louvre in Paris. One of his key pupils was Bernardino Luini.
Death and Testament
Bergognone's will was drawn up on April 4, 1523, the same year of his death. His passing marked a significant loss for the Lombard school of painting.
