Biography of Amelia Sach/Brennan and Annie Walters

Amelia Sach/Brennan and Annie Walters were British serial killers. Amelia Brennan, born in 1873, died on February 3, 1903. Annie Walters, born in 1869, also died on February 3, 1903. Both women were involved in a series of murders in East Finchley, London.

Amelia Brennan

Amelia Brennan initially worked as a midwife, taking care of deliveries at home on Stanley Road. Later, she worked at Claymore House on Hertford Road. In around 1900, she started offering to find new homes for unwanted children for a fee. Most of her clients were maids and their employers who wanted to discreetly get rid of unwanted babies. Brennan charged money for taking care of pregnant women and requested £25-30 as a "gift" for the supposed adoptive parents. The exact number of infants murdered by Brennan is unknown, but it is believed to be a significant number. To support the scale of their crimes, a large amount of children's clothing was found at Claymore House. Amelia Brennan was hung at Holloway Prison on February 3, 1903.

Annie Walters

Annie Walters was responsible for taking the newborns from their mothers. She would then poison them with a mixture of morphine and chlorodyne. Walters was caught when her landlord in Islington, who happened to be a police officer, became suspicious of her activities. The exact number of infants murdered by Walters is unknown, but it is believed to be many. She was also hung at Holloway Prison on February 3, 1903.

Early Life and Criminal Activities

Not much is known about the personal lives of Sach/Brennan and Walters. It is clear that Brennan had a criminal history before involving Walters in their activities. Brennan herself was a mother and the 1901 census in England and Wales shows that she had a child in Clapham. She had also married a builder named Jeffrey Brennan. Brennan lied about her age during her arrest; she was 32, not 29 years old. Walters' background is even less known, but she was also married. She had alcohol-related issues and often portrayed herself as a nurse. At the time of her arrest, she was described as "feeble-minded." There is a slight possibility that the women started killing infants earlier than discovered, and an innocent victim may have paid for their crimes.

Legacy and Burial

Amelia Sach/Brennan and Annie Walters were buried in unmarked graves within Holloway Prison. In 1971, the prison underwent extensive reconstruction, and the remains of all executed women were exhumed. With the exception of Ruth Ellis, the remains of the other female criminals were reburied in a mass grave at Brookwood Cemetery, numbered 117.
