Keijiro Amemiya: Rags to Riches Entrepreneur
Keijiro Amemiya, born on October 24, 1846, in the village of Ushioku, rose from humble beginnings as a village head's son to become a prominent Japanese entrepreneur and financier.
Early Business Ventures
Amemiya's entrepreneurial journey began with street trading, where he displayed a knack for profitability. Emboldened by his success, he ventured into financial dealings, including currency, silver, and gold exchange, albeit with varying degrees of fortune.
Railway Tycoon
In 1888, Amemiya became director of the government-owned Kai-Musashi Railway, connecting Tokyo to Yamanashi Prefecture. This marked the beginning of his formidable railway empire. He later played instrumental roles in establishing and managing the Kawagoe Railway and the Hokkaido Colliery and Railway Company.
Industrial Diversification
In 1892, Amemiya established the Japan Casting Company, expanding his business interests beyond railways. He went on to found the Tokyo Tramway Company in 1903, further solidifying his position in the transportation sector.
Later Career and Legacy
After retiring as director of the Tramway Company, Amemiya continued to drive the development of Japan's railway industry, heading the Tokyo-Yokohama Railway and the Enoshima Railway. His influence extended to various other sectors, including maritime shipping, oil refining, and trading.
Passing of a Legend
Keijiro Amemiya passed away on January 20, 1911. Throughout his life, he earned the nickname "King of Speculators" for his astute business dealings and transformative contributions to the Japanese economy. His legacy lives on in the countless businesses and infrastructure projects he helped establish and nurture.
