Biography of Amir Peretz
Amir Peretz, the Chairman of the Histadrut Trade Union Federation, was born in Morocco in 1953 and immigrated to Israel with his parents in the same year. He began his political career by becoming the head of the local council of the city of Sderot, which was his first elected position.
Since 1988, Peretz has been continuously elected as a member of the Knesset, the Israeli parliament. During his tenure, he served as a member of various parliamentary committees, including the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, the Labor and Welfare Committee, the Legislation and Law Committee, and the Status of Women Committee.
Recently, Peretz achieved a significant milestone in his political career by winning the primary elections in the Labor Party. This victory effectively positioned him as the new leader of the main opposition political structure in Israel. The long-time leader of the Labor Party, Shimon Peres, suffered a defeat in the elections.
Following his win, Peretz has called for early parliamentary elections, and Prime Minister Sharon has expressed his willingness to consider this request. Peretz has also announced that the ministers from the Labor Party will resign from the government, and he has no intention of negotiating with Sharon, the leader of the ruling Likud party, to maintain a coalition government. According to Peretz, even if Sharon manages to form a new cabinet with other parties, the Labor Party intends to vote against the government budget, which would result in its resignation by March of next year.
Amir Peretz, at the age of 53, is a married man and has four children. His political journey, from leading a local council to becoming a prominent figure in the Israeli parliament, reflects his dedication to serving his country and advocating for the rights and welfare of its people.
