Early Life and Radio CareerEmsy Strickland was born on January 10, 1919, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. In the early days of radio, she began her acting career, appearing in numerous radio dramas. During the Golden Age of Radio, "soap operas" were popular radio shows, and Strickland played a notable role as Katie Evans, the girlfriend of private detective Brad Runyon (played by Jack Smart) in the detective drama "The Fat Man," based on the novels of Dashiell Hammett. Strickland's involvement with "The Fat Man" spanned from 1947 to 1951.
Television Career
As television became popular, Strickland transitioned successfully to the small screen. She appeared as a regular or guest star in a vast array of television series, including "Gunsmoke," "The Dick Van Dyke Show," "The Andy Griffith Show," "I Love Lucy," "The Twilight Zone," "Mission: Impossible," "Happy Days," "Carter Country," "Bonanza," "The Golden Girls," "ER," "7th Heaven," "Ellen," "Wings," "Alf," "Burke's Law," "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman," "Ned and Stacey," and "Father Dowling Mysteries."
Film Career
Strickland's film roles included "Pretty Woman," "Doc Hollywood," and "I'll Be Home for Christmas." Her final film appearance was in "Wanderlust" in 2001.
Personal Life and Later Years
Emsy Strickland married fellow radio and television actor Frank Berens on May 9, 1946. Their son, Tim Berens, did not follow in his parents' footsteps and only appeared in one film, the 1974 French comedy "Vous intéressez-vous à la chose?"
Strickland faced challenges in her later years due to Alzheimer's disease, which affected her memory and recognition of loved ones. However, she maintained her cheerful and positive spirit until the end. She passed away at the age of 87 in Spokane, Washington, on July 5, 2006.
