Biography of Anaïs Nin
Anaïs Nin was an American and French writer, known for her erotic novels and diary, which she kept for over 60 years.
Early Life and Education
Anaïs Nin was born in Neuilly-sur-Seine, near Paris. She was the daughter of Cuban pianist Joaquín Nin, who settled in France (after leaving Haiti during the French Revolution and then moving to the United States) and Cuban singer Rosa Culmell, whose ancestors included Danes and French people. One of Anaïs' brothers, Joaquín Nin-Culmell, also became a renowned pianist.
After her parents' divorce in 1916, Anaïs moved with her mother and brothers to New York, where she began working as a model at the age of 16.
Writing Career and Personal Life
In 1923, Anaïs married artist Ian Hugo (formerly Hugh Parker Guiler). The couple settled in Paris, where her husband became involved in banking while Anaïs delved into writing. She published a book about D.H. Lawrence, practiced psychotherapy, and studied under Otto Rank.
From 1931 to 1934, Anaïs had an active correspondence with Henry Miller and became friends with Lawrence Durrell and visited the art community of Montparnasse.
In 1939, Anaïs and her husband returned to New York, where she appeared in several films thanks to her husband's influence. She played the role of Astarte in Kenneth Anger's film "Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome" and also appeared in Maya Deren's film "Ritual in Transfigured Time."
In 1955, Anaïs entered into her second marriage with literary agent Rupert Pole.
Throughout her life, Anaïs Nin continued to write and publish both fiction and non-fiction works, exploring themes of sexuality, feminism, and personal growth.
