Early Life and Career
Born on March 21, 1973, in Los Angeles, California, Ananda Lewis faced adversity from a young age. With African and Native American (Cree and Blackfoot) ancestry, she endured the divorce of her parents at age two and the subsequent absence of her mother, who traveled to Europe for respite. Raised by her grandmother, Lewis yearned for her mother's presence.
Despite childhood struggles, Lewis displayed immense talent in the arts. At the age of eight, she overcame a speech impediment. At "Little Miss San Diego" in 1981, she showcased her self-choreographed dance inspired by Stevie Wonder and Paul McCartney, attracting the attention of a talent agent.
Education and Law School
Lewis attended the San Diego Creative and Performing Arts High School for nine years, where she developed her artistic skills. At thirteen, she began volunteering as a teacher, fostering her interest in education and youth counseling. However, her family encouraged her to pursue a more lucrative career in law. In 1995, she graduated from Howard University with a degree in law.
MTV and Television Career
In college, Lewis's interest in music led her to join a band, which eventually caught the attention of MTV. In the late 1990s, she became a VJ for the channel, where she hosted various shows and gained prominence through her activism.
Personal Life and Family
Lewis credits her strength and resilience to her mother, grandmother, and sister. Despite a tumultuous childhood, she has reconciled with both her parents in adulthood. She was close friends with the late singer Aaliyah. Lewis is a godmother to six children.
