Anatole Dussu, the French Grandmaster of Checkers
Birth and EducationAnatole Dussu was born on July 22, 1857, in Bordeaux, France, to a wine merchant family. He received a medical education before embarking on his remarkable career in checkers.
Ascent to Mastery
In the mid-1880s, Dussu emerged as one of the strongest checkers players in France. He triumphed in the inaugural (1885) and second (1886) International Checkers Tournaments in Amiens. These victories solidified his reputation as an unofficial world champion.
Tournament Success
Following a fifth-place finish in the 1891 Paris Tournament, Dussu reaffirmed his prowess by sharing first to third place with Barteling and Raphael in the 1894 Paris Tournament.
Match Against Weis
Despite his impressive tournament results, Dussu suffered a setback in a series of matches against Isidor Weiss from 1897 to 1899. However, he rebounded in 1900 by drawing a match with Weiss (+1-1=2).
Legacy
Dussu remained among the top checkers players in France until his death on June 10, 1906, in Paris. His name is synonymous with a brilliant sacrifice he employed in the 1886 Amiens Tournament against Class de Geer. This strategy, known as the "Dussu Sacrifice," became a staple in checkers play.
