Anatoliy Dimarov: A Ukrainian Literary Titan

Anatoliy Andreyevich Dimarov was born on May 5, 1922, in Myrhorod, now in the Poltava Oblast of Ukraine. His father, Andronyk Fedotovych Harasyuta, was an affluent peasant, while his mother was the daughter of a priest.

Wartime Experiences

To escape exile in Siberia, Dimarov's father sent his family to Myrhorod, where his wife changed the surname of their two sons. In 1940, following his secondary school graduation, Dimarov joined the Red Army. From June 27, 1941, he fought as a rifleman on the Southwestern Front. On July 17, 1941, he was severely injured near Mogilev, rendering him an invalid of the second group.

After recuperating, Dimarov found himself in occupied territory and became a partisan. When the Red Army returned, he was drafted back into service.

Literary Career

Post-war, Dimarov worked as the head of the editorial department for the newspaper "Sovetskaya Volyn". In 1949, he published his first collection of short stories, "Guests from Volyn". From 1950 to 1951, he studied at the Maxim Gorky Literary Institute in Moscow, and from 1951 to 1953, he attended the Lviv Pedagogical Institute.

Upon completing his education, Dimarov worked as an editor for various publishing houses. He became a member of the Writers' Union of Ukraine in 1949 and the Democratic Party of Ukraine in 1990.

Legacy and Remembrance

Anatoliy Dimarov passed away on June 29, 2014, and was buried in Kyiv's Baikove Cemetery. His literary works, including novels, plays, and short stories, have earned him a prominent place in Ukrainian literature. His prose often explored the themes of war, the Ukrainian countryside, and the human condition.
