Biography of Anna Gavalda
Anna Gavalda is a popular French writer and one of the most widely read authors in the world. Her works have been translated into dozens of languages and continue to be loved by readers worldwide. Gavalda was born in a prestigious suburb of Paris. Her great-grandmother was originally from St. Petersburg, Russia, with a lineage on her Fuldah surname. After her parents' divorce, Gavalda lived in a boarding school from the age of fourteen and later pursued her education at the Sorbonne.
Early Success
In 1992, Gavalda won a national competition for the best love letter. In 1999, while working as a teacher in a middle school, she released her first collection of novellas, "I Wish Someone, Somewhere, Would Wait for Me," which was warmly received by critics. This collection earned Gavalda the Grand Prix RTL. "I Wish Someone, Somewhere, Would Wait for Me" was translated into nearly 30 languages and brought the author fame as a new star in French literature.
Breakthrough Success
However, Gavalda achieved true success with her novels "I Loved Her. I Loved Him" and "Just Together," the latter of which garnered numerous literary awards. All three books became bestsellers, with sales of 1,885,000, 1,259,000, and 2,040,000 copies respectively between 2004 and 2008, earning the author over 32 million euros. In March 2007, Claude Berry's film "Just Together," starring Audrey Tautou, was released in France, adapted from Gavalda's novel of the same name. The film received enthusiastic reviews from French critics and attracted nearly 2 million viewers in the first four weeks of release. At the sixth International Literature and Film Forum held in Monaco, the director received an award for the best film adaptation of a novel.
Continued Work and Current Life
In 2009, Isabelle Braïtman directed a film based on Gavalda's novel "I Loved Her. I Loved Him," starring Daniel Auteuil. Currently, Anna Gavalda resides in Melun and spends three hours a day writing novellas and articles for the magazine "Elle." She is also a mother to two children.
