World Championships and National Achievements
Gantvarg achieved unprecedented success in international checkers, claiming four World Championships in 1978, 1980, 1984, and 1985. He also triumphed as the USSR champion four times between 1969 and 1981.
Recognition and Honors
In recognition of his exceptional achievements, Gantvarg was awarded the title of International Grandmaster in 1976 and Honored Master of Sports in 1985. In 1984 and 1985, he was hailed as the Best Athlete of the Belarusian SSR.
Conflict with World and European Federations
In 2007, Gantvarg announced a boycott of the World Checkers Federation and the European Checkers Confederation. He refused to participate in tournaments organized under their auspices. Despite this, he remained loyal to the Belarusian national team.
Autobiography and Other Publications
Beyond his sporting career, Gantvarg is also an accomplished author. In 1986, he published his autobiography titled "50 Games on 100 Squares."
