Anatoliy Dmitriyevich Gorsky: A Distinguished Soviet Historian

Early Life and Family

Anatoliy Dmitriyevich Gorsky was born in Moscow to parents with a strong academic background. His father, Dmitry Dmitriyevich Gorsky, was a priest's son and a graduate of Moscow University. His mother, Varvara Alexandrovna Gorovaya (née Smirnova), was also a priest's daughter and worked as a schoolteacher.

Education and Military Service

Gorsky's father was arrested and exiled in 1936, but was released four years later. Anatoliy completed school in 1941 and went on to fight in the Great Patriotic War. He served in the 1st Tank Army and ended the war in Berlin, discharged as a guards sergeant.

Academic Career

After the war, Gorsky enrolled in the History Department of Moscow State University (MSU), graduating with honors in 1952. He completed his postgraduate studies in 1955 and worked at the State Public Historical Library and the publishing house "Soviet Encyclopedia".

From 1956, Gorsky taught at MSU's Department of History of the USSR Feudal Period. He earned his doctorate in 1973 with a dissertation on the peasants' struggle for land in 15th and early 16th century Russia. In 1975, he became a professor and served as head of his department from 1979 to 1988.

Research and Publications

Gorsky's research focused on the economic and social conditions of the peasantry in medieval Russia. He published widely and authored textbooks as well as chapters in collective works on Russian history, economics, and culture. In 1982, he was awarded the State Prize of the USSR for his contributions to "Essays on Russian Culture".

Personal Life and Legacy

Gorsky married Natalia Alexandrovna Kozhin, also a historian. They had a son, Anton, who followed in their footsteps as an historian. Gorsky's legacy continues through his academic publications and the influence he exerted on generations of students.
