Biography of Eduard Meyer

Eduard Meyer, a German specialist in ancient history, Egyptology, and Oriental studies, was always considered one of the foremost experts on the history of the ancient world. He was born on January 25, 1855, in Hamburg. His father taught at the Johannaeum Humanistic Gymnasium, where Eduard also enrolled as a student. In the spring of 1872, Eduard passed his final exams with remarkable achievements, earning him a scholarship.

Early Education and Language Studies

The main goal of Meyer's education was to learn as many ancient languages as possible to utilize them for historical research. Initially, he enrolled at the University of Bonn. However, his expectations were not met by the specialist in ancient history, Arnold Schaefer. Consequently, after completing only one semester in Bonn, he transferred to Leipzig University for the winter semester.

Doctoral Dissertation and Major Work

Under the guidance of Egyptologist Fleischer, in 1875, Meyer successfully defended his doctoral dissertation on the history of religion. His most significant work, "History of the Ancient World," was published in five volumes between 1884 and 1902. In this comprehensive work, he presented the historical development of the Ancient Near East, Egypt, and Greece from 366 BC.

Legacy and Significance

To this day, Meyer's collection is considered one of the most important works in the field of ancient world studies, although, of course, some of the information has been supplemented with the findings of modern research.
