The Early Years
Anatoly Zayaev, a Ukrainian coach and former Soviet footballer, began his career at the meatpacking plant in Simferopol, where the "Pishchevik" team was based. Zayaev played for the team and served as the club manager. In 1958, the Simferopol team earned the right to compete in the Class B of the USSR championship, largely due to the efforts of Yakov Raskina, the chairman of the "Avangard" sports society.
When the "Tavriya" team was formed, Zayaev was invited to the sports committee to recommend players for the club. At the time, "Avangard" consisted primarily of local players. While not officially part of the team, Zayaev played an active role in its development. Nikolay Glebov served as the coach during this period.
The Tavriya Years
Financial difficulties arose during Zayaev's early tenure at "Tavriya." To support the team, Zayaev would feed them at the meatpacking plant. Despite the challenges, the team managed to survive. Zayaev initially served as an administrator, and within three months, he became the team's manager.
However, Zayaev was dismissed from the position on multiple occasions for various reasons. In 1962, "Tavriya" finished third in the Ukrainian SSR championship finals, prompting his departure from the team. After a poor start to the 1963 season, coach Antonin Sochnev was dismissed, and Zayaev was reappointed as caretaker manager. He immediately secured three points in his first away match, helping the team recover and avoid relegation.
Under Zayaev's leadership, "Tavriya" achieved significant success during the Soviet era, winning and placing in the Ukrainian SSR championship, capturing the Ukrainian SSR Cup, reaching the semi-finals of the USSR Cup, and emerging victorious in the USSR First League and Ukrainian Spartakiade. His players went on to become masters of sports in the USSR and Ukrainian SSR, masters of international sports, Olympic medalists, European youth team champions, and заслуженные тренеры in Ukraine.
In 1992, "Tavriya" became the inaugural Ukrainian champions, and in the 1993/1994 season, they reached the Ukrainian Cup final. Zayaev also coached other teams, including "Dnipro" Dnipropetrovsk, "Atlantika" Sevastopol, SC "Mykolaiv," and "Constructorul" Chişinău. He holds the distinction of being the oldest coach in the Ukrainian Premier League. In the 1997/1998 season, he guided SC "Mykolaiv" to the Ukrainian First League title.
Honors and Recognition
Zayaev has been awarded the titles of заслуженный трене in Ukraine and Moldova and has received the Order of the President of Ukraine and the Honorary Diploma of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine "For Special Services to the Ukrainian People."
Family and Legacy
Zayaev has been married to Alla for over 50 years. His son was the former president of the "Tavriya" football club. Zayaev continues to play an active role in the development of football in the regions, including the creation of a football team in Yalta. He also leads IKS-Akademiya in the village of Kuibyshevo.
