Claudio Ranieri: Italian Football Icon
Early Career as a PlayerClaudio Ranieri, born on October 20, 1951, in Rome, Italy, embarked on his football career as a defender. He began his professional journey at AS Roma, but limited opportunities led him to seek playing time at various clubs, including Catanzaro, Catania, and Palermo.
Transition to Coaching and Early Success
In 1988, Ranieri retired as a player and began his coaching career at Puteolana. He rose to prominence during his tenure at Cagliari, which he guided from Serie C1 to Serie A.
Impressive Stint at Napoli and Fiorentina
In 1991, Ranieri joined Napoli, where he spent two years without winning any silverware. However, he made a significant impact at Fiorentina, guiding the club back to Serie A in his first season (1993-94) and securing the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana in 1996.
Spanish Adventure and Atletico Madrid
From 1997 to 1999, Ranieri coached Spanish side Valencia, qualifying them for the UEFA Champions League and winning the Copa del Rey. The following season, he took charge of Atletico Madrid but was dismissed after a lackluster performance.
Return to Juventus and Other Roles
In 2007, Ranieri was appointed manager of Juventus, which had recently been relegated to Serie A. Under his leadership, the team finished third in his first season. However, after a disappointing 2008-09 campaign, he left Juventus by mutual agreement in 2009.
He then had a brief stint at Roma, where he achieved a second-place finish in Serie A and reached the Coppa Italia final. In 2011, Ranieri became the manager of Inter Milan, signing a two-year contract.
