Biography of Andreas Lebeda
Andreas Lebeda was born in Gmunden, Austria in 1957. He decided to dedicate himself to music and made his debut as an opera singer in Steyr after receiving proper training. In 1975, Lebeda began studying German philology at the University of Salzburg and music - vocal, conducting, and piano - at the Mozarteum Conservatory. His mentors at the Mozarteum were Nikolaus Harnoncourt and René Jacobs at the Schola Cantorum in Basel. From 1987 to 1991, he was a student of Kurt Widmer in Basel. Additionally, Lebeda took master classes with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. With his vocal experience, Lebeda started performing with numerous orchestras and opera companies and became a specialist in German song 'lied' and oratorio. He participated in 'liederabends' and chamber vocal music concerts across Europe.
In February 1999, Lebeda made his first appearance on the American stage at Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, DC, in a special concert honoring the 250th anniversary of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's birth. The program included works by Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, and Hugo Wolf, all based on Goethe's poetry.
Accomplishments
Lebeda has performed at various music festivals, including Festival Barocco Viterbo, Festwochen der Alten Musik Innsbruck, Festival Moulin d'Andé, and more. Since 1992, he has been teaching vocal classes at the Bruckner Conservatory in Linz and also taught at the Mozarteum in Salzburg since 1982. Lebeda is the founder and conductor of the ensemble 'Kepler-Konsort' based in Linz.
His repertoire includes baroque, classical, and early romantic styles. He has recorded vocal parts from Cláudio Monteverdi's 'L'incoronazione di Poppea', Heinrich Schütz's 'Weihnachtshistorie' and 'Auferstehungshistorie', and J.S. Bach's 'Christmas Oratorio' and 'Himmelkönig, sei willkommen'. He also participated in the recording of František Václav Míca's musical drama 'L'origine di Jaromeriz in Moravia' and Franz Schubert's vocal cycle 'Winterreise'.
Current Endeavors
Lebeda currently resides in Vienna. His recent European tour included performances in Vienna, Salzburg, Linz, Passau, Berlin, Bregenz, and more. In January 2001, he made his first appearance in New York at Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall, performing chamber vocal music by Austrian composers of the 20th century. In February of the same year, Lebeda performed 'Die schöne Magelone' by J. Brahms at the Austrian Embassy in Washington, DC.
