Biography of Michael Devlin
Early Life and CareerMichael Devlin, an American opera singer, was born on November 27, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois. He gained international recognition as a bass-baritone with outstanding dramatic abilities. Devlin began his career at the New Orleans Opera Association, mentored by the great Norman Treigle. In 1963, he made his debut with a minor role in "La bohème," alongside Audrey Schuh, a native of New Orleans who played Mimì.
Notable Performances
Devlin's next notable performance was as Spalanzani in "Les contes d'Hoffmann" in 1964, sharing the stage with Beverly Sills and Norman Treigle. This production was recorded and is available on CDs. He then went on to perform in "Werther" with Giuseppe di Stefano, "Carmen," "Ariadne auf Naxos," and portrayed Amonasro in "Aïda." In 1999, Devlin returned to the stage for the role of William Jennings Bryan in Douglas Moore's opera "The Ballad of Baby Doe."
New York City Opera
In 1966, Devlin made his debut at the New York City Opera as Hermit in Alberto Evaristo Ginastera's "Don Rodrigo," conducted by Julius Rudel and directed by Tito Capobianco. Throughout his career, Devlin added Leandre in "L'amour des trois oranges," Nireno, and the title role in Handel's "Giulio Cesare in Egitto" to his repertoire. He also performed Colline in "La bohème," the lead role in "Le nozze di Figaro," and Golaud in "Pelléas et Mélisande." Other notable performances include "The Crucible," Ginastera's "Bomarzo," "The Golden Cockerel" with Karan Armstrong, "Lucia di Lammermoor," "Manon," Boito's "Mefistofele," "Louise," "Carmen," "Maria Stuarda," "Susannah," "Così fan tutte," "Les contes d'Hoffmann," and "Faust" directed by Frank Corsaro.
Metropolitan Opera
Devlin made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1978, portraying Escamillo in "Carmen." He appeared in various productions at the Metropolitan Opera, including "Hänsel und Gretel" as Peter, "Les contes d'Hoffmann" as all the villains alongside Plácido Domingo, "Die Fledermaus" as Dr. Falke, "Bluebeard's Castle" with Jessye Norman, "Salome" as Jokanaan, "Samson et Dalila" as Abimélech, "Faust," and "Wozzeck" as the Doctor. Devlin's career also took him to Chicago, Amsterdam, Salzburg, Verona, Madrid, London, Paris, Prague, San Francisco, and other major opera centers worldwide. He has an extensive discography, featuring works by classical and contemporary composers.
