Biography of Andres Amador

Andres Amador is an amazing sand artist who creates intricate patterns and figures using rakes on sandy beaches. He is known for his large-scale creations that leave viewers in awe. However, what makes his work even more remarkable is that he only works during low tide, fully aware that his creations will be washed away by the incoming tide.

To choose his canvas, Amador uses the Google Earth application. He finds the best beaches through the internet and patiently waits for a low tide that coincides with a full moon. Armed with his main tool, a large rake, Andres sets out to "write" his artworks. He meticulously plans his designs in advance, creating sketches, geometric calculations, and rough drafts that he keeps in his album. When he arrives at the beach, he has all the calculations ready in his mind and on paper.

His patterns can take the form of precise geometric shapes, whimsical swirls, flowers, or zigzags. Unfortunately, all of his creations are short-lived, disappearing forever with the rising tide. While Andres mostly works alone, he occasionally receives help from a few people for particularly large projects. Some of his largest artworks measure around 100x150 meters.

Amador cherishes the process of creating art more than the permanence of his work. He loves working barefoot on the beach more than anything else in the world. In his early 40s, Andres Amador is originally from San Francisco. He discovered his ideal beach not far from home. Inspiration for his works can be found everywhere, from cracks in mud to ripples on water, spiderwebs, and sandy dunes.

Although Amador is not the only artist of his kind, there is a small community of sand artists around the world. Beach art is becoming an increasingly popular genre of art. Amador captures photographs of his works from above, as he has to work quickly before the relentless tide reaches his creations.

Some of Amador's works are truly mind-boggling. Despite the calculations on paper, it is hard to imagine how he can bring them to life on such a fragile material as sand. Regardless, with his rake, sandy beach, and low tide, Amador tirelessly creates his astounding figures that soon transform into elaborate patterns. Sadly, the ocean becomes the sole owner of his creations as it slowly approaches with each passing minute. But the next morning, Andres Amador stands on a clean "canvas" with his trusty rake and new mesmerizing art projects in mind.
