Biographical Sketch of Per Kirkeby

Early Life and Education:

Per Kirkeby (born 1938) is a prominent Danish artist, sculptor, writer, and architect. Born in Copenhagen, he initially pursued geology at the University of Copenhagen, graduating in 1964. In 1958, he embarked on an expedition to Greenland, which significantly influenced his artistic approach.

Artistic Affiliations and Influences:

In 1962, Kirkeby joined the avant-garde art group "Den Eksperimenterende Kunstskole," where he experimented with graphics, film, and installations. He received a three-year scholarship from the "State Art Foundation" in 1965. Inspired by Andy Warhol, Kirkeby produced 24 short films between 1968 and 1989.

Artistic Development:

Transition to Informalism:

In the early 1970s, Kirkeby transitioned from Pop Art to Informalism, an abstract painting style he had previously criticized. In 1973, he created his first brick sculpture, "House," followed by his first oil paintings in 1974.

Sculpture and Large-Scale Paintings:

During the 1980s, Kirkeby focused on creating large-format oil paintings and brick sculptures. His work was exhibited at prestigious exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale and documenta 7 and 9 in Kassel.

International Recognition and Legacy:

In 1987, Kirkeby was awarded the Thorvaldsen Medal for his artistic achievements. His works have been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions worldwide.
