Early Life and Education
Gil Shaham was born in 1971 in Champaign, Illinois, to a Jordanian father and an American mother. He began playing the violin at age four and quickly displayed a prodigious talent. By the age of nine, he had performed as a soloist with the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra.
International Recognition
Shaham's international career began in 1987 when he won the Naumburg International Violin Competition. Over the next few years, he won numerous other prestigious awards, including the Avery Fisher Career Grant (1988) and the Gramophone Award for Best Concerto Recording (1992).
Solo and Orchestral Career
Throughout his career, Shaham has performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Israeli Philharmonic. He is known for his technical virtuosity, lyrical playing, and wide-ranging repertoire.
Recording and Collaborations
Shaham has recorded extensively, including a Grammy-winning album of Mozart violin concertos (1998) and a collection of Bach's solo violin works (2002). He has also collaborated with renowned musicians such as Vladimir Ashkenazy, Zubin Mehta, and Yo-Yo Ma.
Teaching and Advocacy
In addition to his performing career, Shaham is also a dedicated teacher. He has served as a faculty member at the Juilliard School and has conducted master classes worldwide. He is also an advocate for music education and has supported numerous outreach programs.
Awards and Recognition
Shaham has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career, including the Avery Fisher Prize (1989), the Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Soloist Performance (2003), and the Medal of Arts (2012). He has also been named a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government.

Shaham is married to pianist Orli Shaham, and they have two children. He is an avid runner and enjoys spending time with his family.
