Biography of Andrés Gómez
Early Life and Tennis CareerAndrés Gómez is a former Ecuadorian tennis player best known for his victory in the men's singles tournament at the French Open in 1990. He began his professional career in 1979, initially playing predominantly in doubles. In 1980, Gómez won five doubles tournaments in Sarasota, Hamburg, Washington D.C., Madrid, and Quito. The following year, he secured seven victories in Hamburg, Rome, Brussels, Bordeaux, Madrid, Quito, and Santiago.

Continued Success and Grand Slam Titles
In 1982, Gómez managed to win only one tournament in Bordeaux. In 1983, he reached the finals of doubles tournaments in Caracas and Johannesburg but was defeated in both instances. Gómez also reached the finals in Nice and Wembley in 1984, winning another title in Wembley. In 1985, he reached the finals in Marbella, Hamburg, and Stockholm, winning all three. In 1986, Gómez reached the top spot in the world doubles ranking and won seven doubles tournaments, including the US Open, partnering with Slobodan Živojinović.
In 1988, Gómez won his second Grand Slam title in doubles, partnering with Emilio Sánchez to win the French Open. Between his two Grand Slam victories, he also won doubles championships in Boston and Monte Carlo. Gómez claimed his first victory in a significant singles championship in Bordeaux in 1981. In 1982, he won the Italian Open and secured another title in 1984.
French Open Victory and Retirement
Gómez's greatest achievement to date is his victory at the French Open in 1990. That year, he reached his first and, so far, only Grand Slam final. In the final, he faced 19-year-old Andre Agassi, who, like Gómez, was competing in his first Grand Slam final. Agassi was considered the clear favorite, but Gómez managed to defeat the promising young player in four sets. Shortly after, Gómez reached the fourth spot in the world tennis rankings. Throughout his career, Gómez won 21 singles and 33 doubles tournaments. His last singles victory came in 1991 in Brasília, while his last doubles victory occurred in 1992 in Barcelona.
Personal Life and Hobbies
During his youth, Gómez enjoyed watching Manuel Santana play at a local club. He was coached by Patricio Rodriguez and Colon Nunez, and his idols were Lew Hoad and Rod Laver. Among all the opponents Gómez faced during his ten-year active career, the toughest challenges came from Jimmy Connors and Ivan Lendl.
Gómez is married to Anna Maria, and they have two children, Juan Andres Jr and Emilio. They got married on June 13, 1986, and their first child was born on December 12, 1987, followed by their second child on November 28, 1991. In his free time, Gómez enjoys playing golf and surfing when not involved in tennis.
