Biography of Andres Pastrana

Andres Pastrana, the President of Colombia, was born in 1954 in Bogotá. He completed his education at the Rosario College in the capital city and studied international law at Harvard University. He is married and has a son and two daughters.

Political Career

As the leader of the Conservative Party, Andres Pastrana Arango became the 87th head of state in the history of Colombia, winning the general elections in August of this year. Following tradition, the inauguration ceremony took place on the national holiday - the day of the Battle of Boyacá. On August 7, 1818, the Spanish invaders were defeated there, and Colombia was liberated from colonial rule.

Government Priorities

Andres Pastrana sees economic and political reforms as well as a peaceful resolution of the armed conflict, which has been ongoing in Colombia for over 40 years, as the main priorities of his government. To overcome the economic crisis, the president believes in an uncompromising fight against corruption and reducing state expenditures. In order to reduce unemployment, he proposed tax exemptions for companies that create new job opportunities.

Peace Process and Initiatives

Pastrana has taken on the responsibility of personally leading the negotiation process with rebel groups. One of the new president's initial initiatives was the decision to issue a government loan to support peace efforts. All legal entities and individuals are obligated to allocate significant amounts from their incomes towards the peaceful resolution of the internal armed conflict.
