Early Life and Education
Ani Yudhoyono was born as Kristiani Herawati on 6 July 1952, in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. She began studying medicine at the Christian University of Indonesia in 1973. However, her studies were interrupted when her father was appointed ambassador to South Korea, and she moved there with him.
Marriage and Political Involvement
In 1976, Ani married Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, a young officer in the Indonesian military. As her husband's career progressed and he assumed ministerial positions in various governments, Ani became an active member of several women's organizations. In 2004, she helped establish the Democratic Party, a political party founded by Yudhoyono's supporters, and campaigned tirelessly for his presidential bid.
First Lady of Indonesia
When her husband was elected president in 2004, Ani became the First Lady of Indonesia. She launched several initiatives, including a campaign against polio and the "Smart Cars" project, which provided mobile libraries to distribute children's books in Jakarta. She also played a role in aiding the reconstruction of Aceh and Nias provinces, which had been devastated by earthquakes and tsunamis.
Personal Interests and Legacy
Ani Yudhoyono was an avid photographer and orchid enthusiast. In 2015, a new orchid species in Singapore was named after her. She was a highly visible public figure and active on Instagram, amassing over 6.4 million followers before her passing.
Family
Ani was the daughter of Lieutenant General Sarwo Edhie Wibowo, a prominent figure in Indonesia's history. She and her husband, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, had two sons: Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, a retired military officer and politician, and Edhie Baskoro Yudhoyono, a member of the Indonesian Parliament.
Death
Ani Yudhoyono passed away on 1 June 2019, at the age of 66, after battling leukemia. She was laid to rest at the Kalibata Heroes Cemetery in Jakarta.
