Biography of Andrew Grove

Andrew S. Grove, one of the creators of Intel, was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1936. He grew up in a family that owned a small dairy shop. However, after the Soviet invasion of Hungary in 1956, his father's business was nationalized and Grove was forced to emigrate to the United States.

In 1957, Grove enrolled at City College in New York, where he excelled in his studies and earned a bachelor's degree in chemical technology in 1960. He then went on to study at the renowned University of California, Berkeley, where he obtained a doctoral degree in physics in 1963. After completing his studies, Grove began working at the research laboratory of Fairchild Semiconductor in 1963. Four years later, he was invited to be the assistant director of research and development at the company.

In July 1968, Dr. Grove played a crucial role in the founding of Intel. He became its president in 1979, its executive director in 1987, and its executive director and chairman of the board in 1997. In May 1998, Grove stepped down as executive director but remained as chairman of the board.

Dr. Grove is the author of over 40 technical publications and several patents in the field of semiconductor technology and devices. He taught semiconductor device physics to senior students at the University of California, Berkeley for six years. Currently, he lectures on the topic of "Strategy and Action in the Data Processing Industry" at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business.

Throughout his career, Andrew Grove has received numerous prestigious academic awards. He was awarded an honorary doctorate of science from City College in 1985, a doctorate of engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1989, and an honorary doctorate of law from Harvard University in 2000.

Grove's first book, "Physics and Technology of Semiconductor Devices," published by John Wiley and Sons, Inc. in 1967, became a textbook in many leading universities in the United States. His book "High Output Management," released by Random House in 1983 and Vintage in 1985, has been translated into 11 languages and recently reissued by Vintage Books. His book "One-on-One With Andy Grove" was published by G.P. Putnam's Sons in June 1987 and Penguin in 1989. Grove's book titled "Only the Paranoid Survive" was released by Doubleday in September 1996, and his latest work, "Swimming Across," was published by Time Warner Books in November 2001. Grove has also authored numerous articles in Fortune, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times, as well as a management column in several newspapers and Working Woman magazine.

Andrew Grove has been elected as a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and a member of the National Academy of Engineering. He has been honored with various awards, including the Engineering Leadership Recognition Award from IEEE in 1987 and the AEA Medal for outstanding achievement in 1993. In 1997, Industry Week named him "Technology Leader of the Year," CEO magazine declared him "CEO of the Year," and Time magazine named him "Man of the Year." In 1998, he was named "Executive of the Year" by the Academy of Management. In 2000, Andrew Grove received the honorary IEEE Medal, and in 2001, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Strategic Management Society.
