Early Life and Education

Born in Leicester, England, Jonathan Bate spent his childhood in New Zealand. He obtained his First Class Honours and Master of Arts degrees from the University of Auckland, and his Doctor of Philosophy degree from King's College, Cambridge.

Academic Career

Teaching and Scholarship

From 1969 to 1973, Bate taught at the Universities of Wellington, Leeds, and Nairobi. In 1981, he co-authored a monograph on Katherine Mansfield with Claire Hanson.

Shakespearean and Renaissance Studies

However, Bate's primary focus has been on Shakespeare, his contemporary playwrights, and the history of English Renaissance theater. He has authored numerous scholarly articles and written commentaries on the plays of Shakespeare and John Fletcher.

Contributions to Scholarship

Restoration of the Globe Theatre

Bate served as the principal investigator for the reconstruction of the Globe Theatre in London. He also consulted on the construction of the Blackfriars Theatre in Staunton, Virginia.

Editorial Leadership

From 1988 to 1998, Bate edited the renowned academic journal Modern Language Review. Prior to his retirement, he was a Professor at the University of Reading.
