Andrew Van de Ven is an American specialist in organizational issues and a professor in the Department of Organizational Innovation and Change at the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. He is ranked 26th in the list of the most cited economists in the world in the 'Essential Science Indicators' database.

Early Life and Education

Andrew Van de Ven was born in 1945. He obtained his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1972.

After completing his education, Van de Ven taught at Kent State University until 1975. He then joined the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he taught until 1981. He later transitioned to the Carlson School of Management, where he teaches courses on organizational behavior and research methods.

Van de Ven has had a long and distinguished career in the field of management. He served as the President of the Academy of Management from 2000 to 2001 and held various leadership positions within the organization. He was the Chief Editor of the journal 'Organization Science' from 1989 to 1996 and has served on the editorial boards of other journals and book series.

Awards and Achievements

In 1996, Van de Ven and Scott Poole received the 'Best Article Award' for their work on explaining development and change in organizations. He was also honored with the 'Distinguished Scholar Career Award' in 1997 for his contributions to the field.

Van de Ven has authored several influential books, including 'The Innovation Journey,' which was a finalist for the 'Terry Book Award' in 1999. His book 'Organizational Change and Innovation Processes: Theory and Methods for Research' was selected as the Best Book for 2000-2001 by the Organizational Communication Division of the National Communication Association (NCA). In 2008, he received the 'Terry Book Award' for his book 'Engaged Scholarship.'

Research Contributions

Throughout his career, Van de Ven has conducted extensive research on various organizations and has explored management issues comprehensively. He is known for his work on the 'Nominal Group Technique,' a method for generating ideas and brainstorming in groups, which he promoted alongside Andre Delbecq in the late 1960s.

In the 1980s, Van de Ven led an innovative research program in Minnesota that involved thirty specialists tracking the development of fourteen different organizational innovations, from conceptualization to implementation. Since 1994, he has been conducting field research on organizational change processes in the healthcare and industrial sectors in Minnesota.
