Childhood and Early Life
Giuseppe Moscati: From a Devout Home to MedicineBorn in the southern Italian town of Benevento, young Giuseppe Moscati was one of nine children in a wealthy and devout family. A Calling to Medicine
At the age of 12, an event forever changed Giuseppe's life. His brother Alberto returned from military service with a head injury, suffering from seizures and epilepsy. Giuseppe dedicated himself to caring for his brother, and it was at that moment that he decided to pursue a career in medicine.
After completing high school, Giuseppe enrolled in the medical faculty of the University of Naples. Despite the prevailing anti-religious sentiments among medical professionals at the time, Giuseppe remained steadfast in his faith. The death of his father from a stroke during his first year of medical school reinforced his determination to save lives.
Academic and Medical Achievements
Giuseppe excelled in his medical studies, pursuing not only medicine but also architecture, painting, and psychology. He also mastered French, German, and English. Through his travels and encounters with the Society of Jesus, he became fascinated with the intersection of medicine and spiritual healing.
Upon graduating from medical school, Giuseppe became an assistant physician at a city hospital, where he quickly demonstrated his organizational and medical skills. He played a crucial role in overseeing the evacuation of the hospital during the devastating eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 1906.
Giuseppe continued his education by enrolling in the Institute of Physiology of Infectious Diseases, where he specialized in infectious diseases and authored several scientific papers. These studies proved invaluable when Naples was struck by a cholera epidemic in 1911. Moscati led the campaign to eradicate the disease and restore the city to health.
A Humanitarian Doctor
Throughout his career, Giuseppe Moscati became renowned for his compassion and dedication to the poor. He provided free medical care to those in need and charged wealthier patients only what was necessary. He often returned excess payment and even paid for medicines himself if patients could not afford them.
Moscati believed that holistic healing required addressing both the physical and spiritual needs of his patients. He inquired about their religious practices and encouraged them to seek solace in faith. His belief in the power of communion was exemplified by his daily attendance at mass.
The Institute for Incurable Diseases
In 1919, Giuseppe Moscati became the director of a unique clinic for terminally ill patients. The institute featured state-of-the-art medical facilities, a church, and a women's monastery. Moscati's contributions to the study of diabetes were groundbreaking and laid the foundation for the development of insulin.
Personal Life and Legacy
Giuseppe Moscati lived a life of celibacy and humility. He shared his modest home with his sister, who served as his housekeeper.
On April 12, 1927, Giuseppe Moscati passed away in his armchair, his hands crossed over his chest. The cause of his death remains unknown, but it is believed that he succumbed to exhaustion from his tireless work.
Giuseppe Moscati was beatified in 1975 and canonized a saint in 1987. His legacy as a "Saintly Doctor of Naples" continues to inspire countless people worldwide, demonstrating the profound impact of compassionate care and the harmony between science and faith.
