Early Life and Medical Career

Andrey Bilzho was born on June 26, 1953, in Moscow, Russia. His father, Georgiy Bilzho, was an engineer, and his mother, Alexandra Rozina, taught physics. From an early age, Bilzho exhibited a passion for drawing.

In 1976, he graduated from the 2nd Moscow Medical Institute as a psychiatrist. During his medical studies, he became fascinated with caricature and graphics. After graduation, he worked as a research scientist at the Scientific Research Institute of Water Transport Hygiene.

Artistic Journey

In the mid-1970s, Bilzho began publishing his caricatures in newspapers such as "Moskovsky Komsomolets," "Literaturnaya Gazeta," and "Sобеsednik." He formally entered the world of painting in the late 1980s.

From 1991 to 2005, Bilzho worked as chief cartoonist for the publishing house "Kommersant." This period was pivotal in his career, as it introduced his iconic character, "Petrovich," to the public.

Television Success and Political Satire

In the 1990s, Bilzho gained immense popularity through his television appearances. He scripted Leonid Yakubovich's program "A Week of Analytics" and became a regular on Viktor Shenderovich's satirical shows "Itogo" and "Free Cheese." His witty political commentaries and humorous stories from his experience as a psychiatrist earned him a devoted following.

Book Publications and Collaborations

Beyond his newspaper and television work, Bilzho also made significant contributions to book illustration, authorial books, animation, and interior design. He debuted as an author in 2001 with the illustrated alphabet book "Azbukvy."

In 2010, he published "Notes of a Passenger," a collection of stories and illustrations originally featured in the magazine "Sakvoyazh SV." He also published a humorous story collection in 2020, reinterpreting classic fairy tales for a modern audience.

Awards and Recognition

Andrei Bilzho has been recognized with numerous professional awards. He is a member of the Union of Russian Artists and the Union of Designers of Russia. In 1999, he became an Academician of the Academy of Graphic Design, serving as its Vice President from 2007. He is also an Honorary Member of the Russian Academy of Arts.

Personal Life

Bilzho's maternal grandfather, Abram Rozhin, was executed in 1937 as a member of the Bund. His paternal grandfather, Viktor Bilzho, was a Catholic who worked as a chief technologist at the Moscow branch of the State Banknote Factory. Bilzho's son, Anton, is a director and screenwriter.
