Early Life and the Athletics Arena

Born on December 20, 1964, in the remote village of Serebropole, Altai Krai, Derksen's passion for running emerged late, at the age of 18. Drawn to the indoor athletics arena near his university dormitory, he became enthralled by the spectacle of competitive running.
