Kenny Bednarek: From JUCO to Olympic Medalist
Early Life and Track CareerBorn on October 14, 1998, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Kenny Bednarek began his track and field journey in the second grade. He excelled in high school, winning seven individual state titles and leading his team to a 4x400m relay championship. His 200m time of 20.43 in 2018 was the fastest in the nation. Bednarek also played football, winning state championships in both track and football in his senior year.
Junior College and Collegiate Career
Despite not meeting the academic requirements for a four-year university, Bednarek enrolled at Indian Hills Community College. At Indian Hills, he ran the fastest indoor 200m in the country, making him the 13th-fastest all-time indoor performer. In 2019, he was named NCAA Division II National Athlete of the Week.
Professional Contract and Transition to 200m
In July 2019, Bednarek left Indian Hills, signed a professional contract with Nike, and began training in Florida with Olympic medalist Justin Gatlin. He initially specialized in the 400m but successfully transitioned to the 200m. "I kind of want to continue that, and maybe in years to come try to run the 100, but I think 200 is my main focus right now," he said in 2019.
Olympic Silver Medal
Despite an injury in the 2019 US Championships, Bednarek qualified for the 2019 World Championships. In the shortened 2020 season, he posted a world-leading time of 19.80s. On August 4, 2021, at the Tokyo Olympics, Bednarek secured a silver medal in the men's 200m final with a time of 19.68 seconds.
