Education and Career
Andrey Aleksandrovich Gonchar, a Soviet and Russian mathematician, was born on November 21, 1931. He graduated from the mechanics and mathematics faculty of the Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov in 1954. Gonchar has been working at the V.A. Steklov Institute of Mathematics since 1964.

Complex Analysis and Approximation TheoryGonchar's research primarily focuses on complex analysis and approximation theory. His significant contributions include:
- Asymptotically precise solutions to extreme problems of E.I. Zolotarev for arbitrary compact subsets in the complex plane
- Complete characterization of meromorphic continuation and singularity structure of analytical functions based on the asymptotic behavior of poles in a fixed row of the Padé table
- Fundamental theorem on the holomorphic extension of a power series to a particular region if its diagonal Padé approximants have no poles in that region
Rational Approximation
In collaboration with E.A. Rakhmanov, Gonchar developed an innovative method for solving classic problems in rational approximation theory using vector theoretical-potential equilibrium problems. Notably, this method led to the resolution of a prominent problem related to the asymptotics of the Chebyshev constant for the exponential function in 1986.
