Early Life and Military Service
Andrei Grigoryevich Guryev was born in Lobnya, Moscow Oblast. He served in the internal troops of the USSR Ministry of Internal Affairs from 1981 to 1983, as part of the Dynamo sports society.
Education and Political Career
In 1983, Guryev graduated from the State Central Institute of Physical Culture. He then embarked on a career in public administration. Two years after graduating, he became secretary of the VLKSM committee at Dynamo. In 1989, he became first secretary of the Frunzensky district committee.
However, his tenure in that position was brief due to political changes in the country. In 1990, Guryev became head of the Pravoporyadok (Law and Order) charity foundation and a leading expert in the information storage service at Menatep. He rose through the ranks, becoming deputy director of the company's credit and financial enterprises and later deputy head of the bank's investment department.
Business Career
In 1995, Guryev took over the Mining and Chemical Department of ROSPROM, which was also under the control of Menatep. He continued to ascend rapidly, becoming head of the Mining and Chemical Department in 1995, director of Mining and Chemical Production in 1997, and director of both the Direct Investment Department and the Mining and Chemical Production Department the following year.
Political Appointments
Guryev was elected to the Federation Council of the Russian Federation on November 23, 2001, as a representative of the Murmansk Oblast. His credentials were officially confirmed on December 5. From 2001 to 2002, he was chairman of the board of directors of ROSPROM's Apatit subsidiary.
In January 2002, Guryev joined the Federation Council Committee on Natural Resources and Environmental Protection. He was re-elected to the Federation Council in April 2004, again representing the Murmansk Oblast.
Personal Life and Wealth
Guryev is married and has two daughters. His successful entrepreneurial career has placed him on the pages of Forbes magazine. He was ranked 35th overall in 2010, 41st among the country's richest businessmen in 2011, and 4th among the highest-earning officials in Russia in 2012.
