Andrei Nikolaevich Nepemnushchiy
Early Life and EducationAndrei Nikolaevich Nepemnushchiy was born into a family of exiled Narodniks. In 1906, he enrolled at the Kharkov University, but was soon expelled for political activism. After spending a year in prison, he was exiled abroad in 1909. Nepemnushchiy continued his studies in Paris, where he joined the left wing of the Socialist-Revolutionary Party (SRs).
Political Career
February Revolution and Left SR LeadershipAfter the February Revolution in 1917, Nepemnushchiy returned to Russia and emerged as one of the leaders of the left wing of the SRs. He was elected as a deputy to the Second All-Russian Congress of Soviets of Workers' and Soldiers' Deputies. However, he and other left SRs were expelled from the party in October 1917 for their participation in the October Revolution.
People's Commissar of Agriculture
Following the expulsion, Nepemnushchiy co-founded the Party of Left Socialist-Revolutionaries (PLSR). As a member of the PLSR, he supported the creation of a "united socialist government." In the absence of a compromise with right-wing SRs and Mensheviks, the PLSR's Central Committee appointed Nepemnushchiy as People's Commissar of Agriculture in the newly formed Council of People's Commissars (Sovnarkom) in December 1917. He authored the draft law on the socialization of land.
Dissolution of the Constituent Assembly
Nepemnushchiy participated in the Constituent Assembly on January 18, 1918, and spoke in favor of its dissolution. After the signing of the Brest-Litovsk Peace Treaty, he resigned from the government along with other left SR People's Commissars in protest.
Founding of the Party of Revolutionary Communists
In July 1918, Nepemnushchiy led a split from the PLSR and formed the Party of Revolutionary Communists. In 1920, his party merged with the Russian Communist Party (Bolsheviks).
Imprisonment and Execution
In 1935, Nepemnushchiy was arrested and executed in 1937 during the Great Purge. He was posthumously rehabilitated in 1957.
