Early Life and Education
Born to a Peasant FamilyJan Anvelt was born in the village of Orgu, Livonian Estonia, to a peasant family. He pursued education at the Yuryev Teachers' Seminary and obtained a teaching certificate from St. Petersburg.
Revolutionary Career
Joining the BolsheviksAnvelt became a member of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party (RSDLP) in 1907. He studied law at St. Petersburg University as an external student from 1907 to 1912.
Role in the February Revolution
During the February Revolution, Anvelt led the Provisional Revolutionary Committee in Narva and subsequently became the chairman of the Narva Soviet. He was also a member of the Reval and All-Estonian Committees of the RSDLP(b).
Bolshevik Leadership
Member of the Military Revolutionary CommitteeFrom October 1917, Anvelt was a member of the Military Revolutionary Committee (MRC) responsible for the seizure of power in Petrograd.
Chairman of the Estonian Regional Executive Committee
After the MRC's success, Anvelt became the chairman of the Estonian Regional Executive Committee of the Soviets.
Military Commissioner and Government Official
War Commissar of the North-Western RegionIn February 1918, Anvelt served as the military commissioner of the North-Western Region.
Chairman of the Estonian Workers' Commune
From November 1918, he became the chairman of the government and the People's Commissar for Military Affairs of the Estonian Workers' Commune.
Political and Military Work in the Red Army
During the years 1919-1921, Anvelt engaged in political leadership roles within the Red Army.
Underground Activity and the Decembrist Uprising
Undercover Operations in Bourgeois EstoniaFrom 1921 to 1925, Anvelt operated clandestinely in bourgeois Estonia. He played a crucial role in organizing the Decembrist Uprising of December 1, 1924.

Victim of Stalin's RepressionsJan Anvelt fell victim to Stalin's Great Purge. He was arrested, tortured, and killed during an interrogation in 1938.
