Andrei Grigorievich Korzun was a Soviet artilleryman who posthumously received the title Hero of the Soviet Union in 1944. Born into a peasant family in Dubrova, Belarus on December 12, 1911, Korzun was drafted into the army in 1941.
Military Service
During World War II, Korzun served in the 12th Guards Artillery Regiment, 3rd Counter-Battery Artillery Corps of the Leningrad Front. He distinguished himself by silencing multiple German batteries with his accurate artillery fire.
Heroic Sacrifice
On November 5, 1943, the enemy relentlessly attacked the Soviet battery with heavy artillery fire. Despite being severely wounded, Korzun noticed that a shell fragment had ignited gunpowder charges near ammunition. Gathering his last ounce of strength, he crawled towards the fire but could not remove his coat to smother the flames. In a selfless act of heroism, Korzun laid his body on the ignited charges, preventing an explosion that would have endangered his comrades.
Honors and Legacy
Korzun's sacrifice was recognized with the posthumous award of the title Hero of the Soviet Union on February 21, 1944. In honor of his bravery, a street in the Kirovsky district of Saint Petersburg was named after him. He was laid to rest at the Southern Military Cemetery in Saint Petersburg.
